In Ubuntu default installation format is .deb
rpm files for other Linux softwares.
In Terminal type

sudo apt-get install alien
type your password.

If you want to convert X.rpm like this

sudo alien -d X.rpm

you can install windows software on Ubuntu that is .exe files
the process is like

Application--->Add/Remove

search for Wine then list will given
in that install "wine Microsoft windows compatibility Layer"
after completion of this you can install any* .exe file.

How to install software

Ubuntu allows you can install software(GUI) in two ways

goto Application------>Add/Remove in that available software list is there .
